Up to the twentieth century a majority of the people in Switzerland lived and worked in rural areas. The aim of the Swiss Rural History Society (SRHS), established in 2009, is to emphasize the importance of the countryside in historical research. The SRHS initiates and supports research on rural history, brings together researchers on all periods and acts as a link to foreign and international institutions.
The SRHS organises workshops and scientific conferences and, once every year, an excursion. Furthermore, it maintains a multilingual, interactive bibliography on rural history.
