There is a full-time academic vacancy in the History Department of the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven in the area of Political and Social History of the nineteenth and the twentieth century. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competence within this field.

Duties

Research: You develop a research programme at an international level concerning aspects of political and social history of the 19th and the 20th centuries (for example ideologies, institutions, conflicts, movements) on a Belgian, European or wider international level.
You support national and international collaborations of the research group and help promote and further develop these. You also actively assist in the development of the groups future research projects.
You are capable of acquiring competitive funding and you  supervise PhDs at an international level.

Teaching: You ensure high-quality education in the bachelors and masters programmes of history, with a clear commitment for the quality of the programme as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the department through the supervision of master theses and as a promoter of PhD students.
You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuvens vision on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university.

The following courses are part of the position:

  • One historical overview
  • Two methodological courses:
    1. Introduction to historical practice: exercises Modern Period (BA1)
    2. Research Methods: Modern Period (BA2 at KU Leuvens Campus in Kortrijk (KULAK))
  • One graduate course according to your specific competence
  • Possibly one historical course in the Master of European Studies
  • Possibly one area course

You are prepared to provide scientific, social and internal services.

Requirements

You hold a PhD in History or an equivalent relevant degree. You have an excellent research profile in the area of political and social history of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The high standard of your research is to be reflected in publications in leading journals and books.
You also have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
International research and educational experience is recommended.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.
Before teaching courses in Dutch, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch to the required standard.
Please include a research statement (no less than 2 pages) to your motivation letter. In addition, please outline your vision of academic education in a teaching statement (no more than 2 pages).

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and after a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
