Assistant Professor in Food Sociology (tenure track position)
at Wageningen UR
You will teach and coordinate Bachelor and Master courses for the Bachelor and Master program International Development Studies (specialization Sociology of Development), the Master program Food Technology (specialization Gastronomy), and the Master program Organic Agriculture and supervise Master thesis research for these programs. You will undertake independent research and participate in international research projects focusing on the dynamics of food provisioning practices and processes and on the relations between food provisioning and sustainable rural and urban development. Other aspects of the job include project acquisition, training and supervision of PhD students and participation in various research and/or education committees. About 45% of your time will be spent on education, 45% on research and the remaining 10% on a variety of activities within and outside the university.
Starting date: 1 January 2018
Wageningen UR asks for…
- A PhD degree in (rural or food) sociology, food policy, cultural/human geography or related social science discipline;
- An inspiring vision on the sociology of food provisioning;
- Considerable experience with agro-food research, proven by publications in key international journals, and preferably in one or more of the following fields: geographical indications (PDO/PGI products), local food networks, city region food systems, food citizenship, and food sovereignty.
- For educational purposes, a good understanding of and interest in geographical indications is preferred;
- A relevant international network;
- Good didactic qualities and the capacity to motivate students (candidates will be required to follow the Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Program (LTHEP, in Dutch referred to as BKO), a system adopted by all Dutch universities);
- Excellent writing skills;
- Fluency in English and, if appropriate, willingness to learn Dutch.

We offer you a temporary contract for seven years (0.8 – 1.0 fte), which can lead to a permanent employment contract.
Gross year salary ranging from € 48,000 up to € 65,000 (Scale 11 CAO Dutch Universities), based on a full time employment and dependent on expertise and experience. This includes 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
