Diacronie. Studi di Storia contemporanea, no. 36: Travel and Tourism in Twentieth Century Europe

Deadline for abstract submissions: 30 March 2018

The history of tourism, which has overcome the surprising delay in the attention of contemporary historiography towards “vacation” practices, is nowadays a well-established field of research that includes a vast array of methodological approaches. Initially, methods and concepts from economic and cultural history prevailed in mainstream tourism historiography; in recent years, political, public, and environmental history outlined the most promising research avenues.

On the basis of the latest research suggestions, the issue of Diacronie invites contributions on the history of travel and tourism in Twentieth-Century Europe. We welcome articles that present a conceptual-methodological reflection and/or focus on either comparative or single-case studies, covering the chronological scope from the end of the Great War to the present day.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • the rise of mass tourism in inter-war Europe;
  • battlefield tourism (1919-1939);
  • domestic use of tourism to strengthening political consensus;
  • tourism in the Golden age of mass consumption (1945-1975);
  • agro-Politics and Agritourism;
  • tourism and public diplomacy;
  • tourism and environmental history;
  • actors, practices and tourism policy in the bipolar world;
  • tourism and gender in Modern Europe;
  • relations between tourism and memory, heritage tourism.
