In memoriam Dr.Ir. Jan Bieleman
Wednesday June 9th 2021 Jan Bieleman died – 72 years old. For many years (1982 until his retirement 2012) he was an eminent member of the chair group Rural and Environmental History (RHI) in Wageningen. He belonged to the Dutch school of agrarian historians such as Slicher van Bath, Godaert van der Poel and Henk Roessingh, whose successor he was at the Rural History group in Wageningen. He has published many books and articles, and cooperated in international agricultural networks. He was involved in quite a few CORN-publications. For a long time he was the point person for anyone who was interested in Dutch agricultural history. His strength was the geographical and agronomic approach to agricultural history. His main field was Dutch agricultural history from the Middle Ages until the contemporary period. Internationally he is probably best known for his book Five centuries of farming. A short history of Dutch agriculture 1500-2000 published in 2010.
