Remembering Professor Nicola Verdon

It is with great sadness that the British Agricultural History Society reports the death of our friend, colleague and President, Professor Nicola Verdon (1970-2024), who was tragically killed in a cycling accident on 29th December last year. One of the most distinguished rural historians of her generation, Nicola’s publications were particularly acclaimed for the light they shone on the lives of farmworkers and rural women.

Professor Richard Hoyle adds: Nicola had many friends in the European (and indeed global) community of rural historians. She was one of the small team who organized the 2010 conference at the University of Sussex (where she was then working) and thereafter she was often seen at EURHO meetings. If her research concentrated on Britain, her perspectives (and her enthusiasms) were international. And her loss will be felt worldwide too.

The Society will mark Nicola’s significant contribution to the BAHS and the study of agricultural history in due course.
